Developing a realistic fundraising strategy

• Developing a 2-page fundraising strategy – a working document that works for your organisation.

• Review, adapt and respond – how the fundraising strategy must work with your organisation and not against it.

• Responding to the current climate fundraising climate and how to develop meaningful partnerships (e.g co-applications).

Fundraising to end child poverty: Back to Basics

The session will cover the following topics:

• How to find funders? Assessing suitable grants and making sure it’s a good use of resources.

• How to apply for funding? Taking time to prepare and review your core documents: developing a good case of support, budget and cash flow, and keeping track of your trusts and foundation database.

• What do funders look for? My experience sitting on funding panels: making sure your numbers make sense, narrative and being honest e.g. showing your charity, is a good investment.

Information Session: Is child poverty pushing families out of London?

In response to recent indicators in school rolls that there are fewer children in London, we have organised an event which brings together education and research experts to discuss changes in children’s populations across London. Recent Analysis by London Councils attributes some of the drivers of decrease in pupil enrolment to be Brexit, housing costs and a declining birth rate (https://www.cypnow.co.uk/analysis/article/tackling-decline-in-london-pupil-numbers).

We are delighted to be joined by Jared Brading, Executive Head Teacher at Federation of Sacred Heart & St Mary’s RC Primary Schools, Battersea and Jon Tabbush, Senior Researcher at Centre for London to discuss different explanations and impacts of changing children populations and specifically how drivers of child poverty may be a root cause in a decline in children in the city.

The Magpie Project – No child in a home without a kitchen campaign

Imagine trying to prepare three meals a day for your family with no fridge, no cooker, no hob, no microwave – not just for a week or two but – for some families – for months on end. This is not just a problem in Newham. Nationally – Shelter’s report this year estimates that one in four families living in temporary or emergency accommodation have inadequate kitchen facilities. And the government’s 2021/22 figures reported in the Guardian suggest that more than 1,600 families were living in hotels or B&Bs or hostels without access to a kitchen. These figures don’t include those families housed in hotels by the Home Office under the asylum duty, or those housed by children’s services.

The Magpie Project team know that change cannot happen all at once. And while they applaud Newham local authority’s great work to support our families in hotels , they recognise that this is an issue that needs national attention and resources. That is why their ask is going to the Department of Levelling up, Communities and Housing.

This event hosted by 4in10, London’s Child Poverty Network, is an opportunity to learn more about this campaign and the families living in emergency and temporary accomodation. We also would encourage those with expertise on this issue, both lived and learned, to come and contribute to the discussion.

The purpose of the event is to galvanise more organisations to advocate for the change needed to protect these children from the long-term harm that can come from inadequate housing.

4in10 Open Coffee Mornings

If you would like to co-host a coffee morning with 4in10 to discuss a particular theme, please get in touch.

4in10 Open Coffee Mornings are free, fun and open to everyone who shares concern on issues relating to growing child poverty in our capital. Open Coffee Morning sessions are thematic, usually online and with one overarching area which frames the discussion. However, the sessions are truly flexible; attendees can contribute, participate, and engage in ways and on areas that matter to them.
